Visas

Do I need a visa?

If you are not a British Citizen or a citizen of one the European Economic Area (EEA) countries, you may need to apply for a visa before you are legally allowed to commence work in the UK.

If you are unsure as to whether you need a visa check on the UK Visas website.  Here you type in your reason for visiting the UK and your nationality.  You will get instant information about the type of visa you need.

You can also check out the latest information on visas through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

How do I apply?

Visa applications can be made by the individual seeking work or the department or institution wishing to employ the individual.

It is very important to check who will be making the application and, if it is you the individual, it is essential you apply as soon as you can to avoid delays.

It is possible for individuals to apply for a visa online and this can be done through the application section of the UK Visas website.

I need more information

If you need additional information or have a question about your right to work in the UK the Immigration Advisory Service (IAS) is also a good place to seek help.

If you require someone to take on your case, you can ask the IAS if they are able to help, or find another local immigration adviser by contacting the Community Legal Service or the Law Society (details below).  You may need to pay for legal advice (an adviser will explain this to you before carrying out any work).
