1. Train

Fares in the UK depend on when you travel, where you go and how far in advance you book your ticket.  If you travel during the week at peak times the fares will be the most expensive.  Peak times are usually during the working day, Monday to Friday.

National Rail provides information on all UK train services.  They can give you advice on timetables, routes, special offers and family fares and discounts.  You can book rail tickets in person, by calling +44 (0)8457 484950 and over the internet.

2. Bus

Arriva and Stagecoach are the main UK bus companies linking the UK.  They have timetables and routes on their websites.

3. Taxi

Taxis can be a convenient but expensive way of getting around in the UK.  You should always make sure that you take a licensed taxi wherever you are in the UK and if you are unsure about the cost should ask the driver for the approximate cost of the fare before you start the journey.  It is also helpful to carry a list of trusted local taxi services around with you.

4. Coach

National Express is one of the larger national bus companies with services operating throughout the UK and to main destinations in Europe.  Their website has details about services, fares and discounts.

Cheap inter-city travel in the UK is also available from Megabus.

5. Bicycle

The National Cycle Network is a charity organisation which promotes the use of bicycles and a cheap and convenient form of transport.  Some UK universities run a cycle to work scheme.  Information and details will be available on the university website or through Human Resources.

6. Long distance travel

There are a range of airports within the UK with London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports in the south and Manchester airport in the north offering the most frequent flights to the most diverse destinations.

7. London Underground
